PUBLISHED:

In a re-run of the spine-chilling Dokmoka lynching incident that led to the death of Abhijeet Nath and Nilotpal Das, a 34-year-old man – father of an eight-year-old child – died after he was apparently thrashed by a mob over a petty issue at Namti in Sivasagar district of Assam.

Shantanu Borgohain of Nazira was on his way to Bhojo in Charaideo district and had stopped at his sister’s house in Namti on Thursday where he reportedly picked up an argument with some local people.

A video that has now gone viral in social media shows some people tying his hands and mocking and making fun of him.

“He had stopped at Namti on Thursday while on his way to Bhojo. He came to my house and left after some time. However, after a few minutes, I came to know that he reportedly picked up an argument with some people at Namti Bazaar. When I reached the place, I was told that police have already taken him to hospital,” Santanu’s sister said.

“When I reached the hospital, I saw him lying on a hospital bed, his face covered in blood while he was panting heavily. The doctor said his vital parameters had gone down and told me to take him to Joysagar for better treatment,” she added, saying that by the time they reached Joysagar, half-an-hour’s drive from Namti, he had died.

Shantanu’s father questioned why his son was subjected to such treatment while demanding that those responsible for his death should be arrested and awarded exemplary punishment.

Questions are now being asked as to why police refrained from investigating the incident and why did they not investigate the matter amid allegations of cops trying to cover-up the incident.

Although Shantanu’s widow has filed a police complaint, no arrests have been made yet.
