Assam’s artistes shine in Sangeet Natak Akademi awards

GUWAHATI: Amidst all the devastating flood news Assam’s prominent artistes bring laurels to the state by bagging Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowships (Akademi Ratna) and Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards (Akademi Puraskar) for the Year 2018.

Prominent dancer and choreographer Jatin Goswami from Assam, who is known as an exponent of Sattriya dance, has been selected for the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellow (Akademi Ratna) award along with Tabla maestro Zakir Hussain, eminent classical dancer Sonal Mansing and scientist K. Kalyanasundaram Pillai on Tuesday.

Tankeswar Hazarika Borbayan from Assam has been selected for Satriya dance in the category of traditional/folk, tribal music/dance, theatre and puppetry category for Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards (Akademi Puraskar)

Hem Chandra Goswami of Majuli, Assam who is famous for making masks used in Bhaona or Ankiya Naats has been selected for the Akademi Award (Akademi Puraskar) for his contributions in the category of mask making.

Talented mime artiste Kuldeep Patgiri in the category of mime artists, Sattriya dancer Anjali Borbora Borthakur for Sattriya, and khol exponent Manoj Kumar Das in the category of traditional music have brought pride to the State by bagging the prestigious Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar for the year 2018 given by the Sangeet Natak Akademi.

Manju Elangbam from Manipur has been selected for Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar award in the category of Manipuri dance and A. Aneshori Devi would be given the award in the category of traditional and folk music respectively.

The General Council of the Sangeet Natak Akademi, the national academy of music, dance and drama, made the selections at a meeting held on June 26 in Guwahati, the Culture Ministry said.

The Akademi’s General Council also selected 44 artistes from the field of music, dance and theatre across the traditional, folk, and tribal genres, puppetry and overall contribution/scholarship to the performing arts for the Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards (Akademi Puraskar) for 2018.
