The regional Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has come under severe criticism for awarding ticket to an arrested rhino poacher who is currently out on bail to contest the upcoming panchayat elections in Assam.
Ganesh Doley had been arrested on a number of occasions for his alleged involvement in rhino poaching incidents. Doley, who is currently out of prison on bail, has been fielded by the AGP in the upcoming panchayat elections for the post of president of Mori Dhansiri gram panchayat.
Doley was first arrested in 2013 for his alleged involvement in rhino poaching at Kaziranga and re-arrested a couple of time. He is still facing trial in court and has himself admitted to killing rhinos.
However, despite knowing about his involvement in rhino poaching, the AGP awarded him a ticket to contest the upcoming panchayat elections. People of Bokakhat and Kaziranga have expressed shock at AGP awarding a ticket to the rhino poacher to contest the grassroots-level hustings.
