Abhiruchi Sports Day is being observed across Assam on Monday, on the occasion of birthday of Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah, the first athlete from Assam to win a gold at an international event. This year’s Abhiruchi Sports Day has been organized centrally in Guwahati with an annual mass jogging event starting from Chandmari flyover to Radha Govinda Barua Sports Complex.
The run is annually organised by Abhiruchi Sports Day Organising Committee. Along with Bhogeshwar Baruah, Manipur Legislative Assembly Speaker and known Taekwondo player Yumnam Khemchand Singh was also present taking part in the run. A number of school and college students took part in the event.
On the occasion, Baruah said “Time has changed. We were deprived of government support and facilities to continue our sports in our times. But, now the Government, both State and at the Centre has been giving importance on sports. It is a good sign.” Speaking about Assam Express Hima Das, Barua said, “Hima brought laurel to the State and we appreciate it. Now we have to find out more talents like Hima. I am sure there are plenty of talents in the State. But, we are lacking of spotters.”
Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal also greeted Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah on his birthday.

September 3 in Assam is celebrated to mark the life of Bhogeswar Baruah, who was the winner of the gold medal in an 800-metre running event of the 1966 Asian Games. Assam is the only State in India that celebrates a State sports day on the birthday of a living sporting legend.
