Police have arrested another person in connection with the thrashing of a youth and a girl he was courting at Pukhuripara in Goalpara district. The arrested person, identified as Rafizuddin Sheikh, was part of the group of ‘moral policemen’ who assaulted the couple for roaming around with each other.
He is the third accused to have been arrested in connection with the incident that comes less than a month after the Dokmoka mob lynching incident.
Incidentally, Goalpara Police had arrested Qurban Ali, the main accused, on Thursday while taking into custody another accused named Junab Ali.
In a video that went viral bringing the entire incident to light, Qurban Ali and Junab Ali were seen assaulting the duo with sticks for hanging around together. The self-styled protectors of the society took the duo to Pukhuripara LP School after reportedly stopping the youth’s motorcycle.
The mob also prevented local reporters from intervening as they started beating up the duo while others watched the ‘fun’.
Meanwhile, a youth who cooperated with the police in their probe into the thrashing incident of the young couple has claimed to have received death threats from some unknown people. Police are looking into his claims besides carrying forward their probe into the moral policing incident.
